Garden Blush
A mojito is your classic summer highball — light rum, fresh mint, lime, and sparkling water, all in crisp harmony. Here, we’re swapping out half the mint for fresh basil and adding a splash of rosé wine to give it a delicate blush and aromatic complexity. It’s easygoing yet elegant, like sipping a garden party in full bloom.
For a non-alcoholic version, skip the rum and rosé, and use a touch more lime and a splash of cranberry juice to bring color and brightness. Chill your glass in advance to make sure the drink arrives as refreshingly cold as possible.
Do Ahead
Juice the limes and prepare simple syrup up to a day ahead and chill; muddle the herbs and build the drink to order for peak aroma.
Ingredients
- 6 fresh mint leaves (plus extra for garnish)
- 6 fresh basil leaves
- 0.75 oz simple syrup
- 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
- 2 oz white rum
- 1 oz dry rosé wine
- 2 oz cold club soda
What Done Looks Like
The drink should have a pale blush hue with leafy green flecks. The herbs should float just slightly against the ice, signaling it wasn’t over-muddled. The effervescence should be sharp but not aggressive, with delicate bubbles rising consistently. If the drink looks flat or the herbs float too high, it might have been under-stirred or the club soda lost its fizz.
Instructions
- 01 In a cocktail shaker, combine mint leaves, basil leaves, simple syrup, and lime juice.
- 02 Gently press the herbs with a muddler to release their oils without tearing them, then add the white rum and fill the shaker with ice.
- 03 Shake vigorously for 12-15 seconds to chill and dilute, then strain into a highball glass filled with crushed ice.
- 04 Top with the rosé wine and cold club soda; stir gently to combine.
- 05 Garnish with a slapped mint sprig and a small basil sprig for visual appeal.
If It Goes Sideways
- Drink tastes too harsh, too much lime juice or muddling tore the mint — use a softer press and measure citrus carefully next time.
- Drink feels flat, the club soda wasn’t fresh — use a freshly opened bottle and pour gently to preserve carbonation.
